Representation of characters

After analysing my three narrative structures for a romance movie, i found out that stereotypically there are 2 main protagonists. These are the male and female characters.
The males characters are represented in a relaxed way. They seem unbothered by most things and re dressed casually. The are normally with other male friends and do activities that are stereotypically boyish such as football and xbox games.
The females are represented as very feminine as hey are wearing bright colour, usually dresses and skirts. They have there hair done and make up and appear to be making an effort in their appearance. The are usually seem with there friends that are female and carry out activities such as shopping. they are also shown to be more caring and emotional than the male characters.

Narrative Structure of 3 romance movies

Love Drug Classification

We have decided to give our film the rating of a 15. This is the category we feel our film will mostly fit in to. Because our film shows "imitable behaviour" it falls in to a 15 rating as we show scenes of dangerous behaviour.

British Board of Film Classification

"The British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) is an independant, non-governmental body funded through the fees it charges to those who submit film and video works for classification."

Triangle of Dependancy

Our film name

As our questionnaire didn't give us much feedback on our film name, we decided to carryout more research. We kept two of the names from our original questionnaire and added a few more. We then asked members of sixth form to vote there favorite one and these are the results we got:
Love Drug = 12
Forgetting You = 3
Love Passing = 4
Number 23 = 1

From these results we can see that Love Drug had the most votes. The group thought that this would be the most successful name and so this will be our chosen name for the film.

Rose and Thorn Institution Analysis

The name we have chosen for our institution is Rose and Thorn because we thought that this helped to create our own identity in a unique way. Rose links to love and helps to connote all the typical happy connotations of love. By adding Thorn this shows that there isn't always a good story and represents the disruption in the film. Rose and Thorn can also be used to represent other film genres such as horror because the logo isn't just representative of love, but other genres too. We have decided to do the heart in a grey as this isn't a stereotypical romance colour and adds a more Gothic side to the logo. By using gold as the banner, it shows that Rose and Thorn is a top production company as it connotes wealth and success. By having the name in the gold banner it will help the audience to remember the institution and recognise them next time. By using barbed wire wrapped around the heart, it links to the painful side of the logo, which links to the name Thorn. We used barbed wire instead of a thorn because we thought it would appeal more to our audience. It also helps to connote that barbed wire is more painful than a thorn showing that there are many painful side to our films.

Questionnaire Analysis

Once we had received our questionnaire results back, we got together to analyse our results and see our findings to see what our audience wanted from our website and teaser trailer.

1.) We asked mainly females to fill in the questionnaire, so they were the majority against males. We asked a small percentage of males to see the interest levels from them but we found out that they were not interested in the romance genre.
2.) The age group with the highest amount was 15-20yrs. The links in to my core buyer profile and shows that we should reflect a typical teenager/young adults life.
3.) The favorite genre of film among our results was comedy. However, as a group we thought that we would not be able to achieve our full potential if we create a comedy. The second favorite was Romance, and as we feel we can create this at a better quality we have decided to produce a romance film.
4.)Most people we asked visit the cinema once a month. This means that our advertising campaign will have to be strong to gain a large target audience.
5.) After reading our synopsis, most people agreed that they would like to watch our film and trailer. This means that we don't have to make anymore changes o the synopsis to entice the audience.
6.) We received some suggestions like adding more action, a twist, or comedy. After discussing this we have decided that we are not going to include any of these elements as it would create a downfall in our work.
7.) Most people expected something to go wrong which creates drama and breakups in a romance film. People also agreed that a happy predictable ending was also a common romance theme.
8.)The colours that were most popular form connoting romance were Red, White, Pink and Black. Theses colours conotate different meaning when linked to love and help to show the happiness and upset in the romance film.
9.)Most people did not visit film website. This means we will have to included the website address in our trailer and other advertising methods to make to noticeable amongst the audience.
10.) The website were not used as people didn't know that they existed, which reinforces that fact that we have to include ours in a strong advertising campaign.
11.) Most of the suggestions we put on our questionnaire people wanted added to the website. The most unpopular was downloads, we feel that this is because people did know what this meant, and so it is debatable if i will included this in my website.
12.)We have no suggestions as to what to include in our website as our audience had no been using them.
13.) We found out that the audience did not mind if the film had come from a big or small institution, which means that our teaser trailer can follow our own small institution that we have created. This is so we don't become attached to a large production and means we are more feel in our choices to go against stereotypical conventions of we wish to.
14.) In a Romance movie people expect to feel emotion, they want tear jerkers so they can connect to it.
15.) People mainly see trailers at the cinema, or on TV. Another popular response was the advertising campaign, again meaning we need to included it on the TV or at a cinema.
16.) People don't read reviews before watching the film, which means that our film doesn't need any reviews before its ready for the audience.
17.) A trailer is the most popular way to make the film well known, meaning that we need to focus on persuasion techniques.
18.) We received different answers for our film choices, so we feel that we need to carry out more research before we decided on a name.

Core Buyer

This is my core buyer for my romance teaser trailer. I am going to aim it at female teenagers and young adults. I feel that this age brackett will attract the most attentio from the audience as the protagonist is a simular age in the teaser trailer, meaning that they may be able to connect to soem of the issues that arise in the film. This ceates escapism for the viewer and this is another reason why it might be more popular amoungst females of this age. The ageing will be between 16 to 23 years old as i feel that this is the most appropriate age group. The film will therefore mainly be aimed at students and will be able to create a "word of mouth" review amoungst them.

Questionnaire

This is our questionnaire which we formed in our groups. We gave it out to people to find out more information about teaser trailer websites and why people visit them. This will help us to create our own websites individually and from this information we will know what to add to our websites. This questionnaire links specifically to romance genre, as that is our genre. We also contained our film synopsis so that our audience could help us decide if need it changing. Thi will help me to create a website and teaser trailer that the target audience want.

Full Length trailer VS. Teaser Trailer

A teaser trailer is usually between 30 to 90 seconds long, this means that it is limited on the information it can show. A teaser trailer also doesn't want to give to much away, it needs to keep the audience guessing and leave questions in there mind. A full length trailer is between 2 to 4 minuets and contains more of a storyline for a viewer. A teaser trailer is released a long time before the film, whereas a full length trailer is released closer to the films release date. This is so that the audience will be enticed through the time and will also create a bigger audience. A soundtrack is normally used, and this is the same int he teaser trailer and full length trailer so that a link can be created. A narrative voice over may be used, however it is more likely to be used in a full length trailer as it is longer and there is more time for a narrative. Full length trailers show a release date, whereas a teaser trailer will show "coming soon" or a similar effect. The main protagonist is also established in both trailers and sometimes the names of the actors are shown on both types of trailers. An age rating is clearly shown on both of the trailers, this is important because it helps to establish the target audience. The edits in a teaser trailer are much faster than a full length trailer, this is because of the time limit, and also the teaser trailer wants to create tension faster and entice the audience without giving away too much.

Advertising Campaign Mindmap

Advertising campiagn for Love Actually

The advertising poster, DVD cover and trailer all carry similarities from the advertising campaign. As you can see, the colour theme for the film is red, black and white. These colours contrast each other nicely and all have connotation links to love and Christmas, which is the seasonal time that this is set. We also recognise this by the poster use of Christmas trees in the background. The background of the poster is white, showing a link to the colour of snow and again leading us on to the time of year that this film was made. The DVD cover and poster both have the red ribbon and bow. This connotes presents again linking to Christmas, and also as the ribbon creates the affect that its all tied up together, we can see how links are created between the characters in the film. The DVD cover shows the names of the actors underneath a picture, however the poster doesn't do this. the names are also shown on the trailer, and again we see the way that all the characters link on the trailer. The DVD cover shows each person individually, this is to show the importance of each person in he film and again is continued throughout the trailer and film poster. The poster contains reviews and ratings, this is because its a persuasion technique to make people watch it, where as the DVD cover doesn't because most people would have brought it or heard the review by the time the DVD is released. The DVD cover and trailer also emphasise the other romantic movies that have been created under that institution, making it more recognisable for the viewer.

Letters to Juliet Teaser Trailer

The trailer opens and we see the institution for the film. This again gives us positiveness baout the film as it is produced by a well known group. The first shot we see is an establishing shot for the movie. This is also where the music starts and so its hsowns us that this important. We also hear a narrator for the trailer. We are introduced to the main proagoist and we see a couple of shots of her so the viewer can recognise who she is.
We are also introudeced to the story line and "myth" that runs in the story. We then see the protagonist with females, seeking advice. THis is a stereotypically thing to do when girls need help and helps to establish the genre of the trailer and movie. Ww are then introduces to the male protagonist, and as a viewer we see an instant connection between the male and female. The audience view the trio exploring as they search for someone and we also mostly see the young male and female together, showing a connection a being created. The trailer shows the release date for the film and this links to the title, as the background and colour scheme are set out like a letter, also like the letter the female protagonist found at the start. The next shot is of the male and female lying down on the grass, which hold typical links to a romance movie. We see them bonding and wonder what will happen. When we see the older lady find who she has been looking for, we see a mirrored resembelence in the younger couple, leading us to wonder what will happen. After that we see that the male has come to find the female, which leaves our minds wondering on what will happen in the film. The final sot shows us the title of the film as this is the most important for the audience to remember. The music for the trailer is also a song titled, "love story" and the songs lyrics connotate to juliet, showing a good comparison with the trailer soundtrack.

Valentines Day teaser trailer

I have chosen to analyse some Teaser trailers for the genre of Romance.
The first one i will analyse is Valentines Day.
I first notice that the trailer is only 50 seconds long. This is a typical convention of a teaser trailer and fits between the time limit of 30-90 seconds.
The fits shot we see, is the certification page. This allows the audience to have trust in the institution , as this page is well recognised when trailers are shown. This shot remains on the page for a while and there is no sound whilst it is on. We next see the institution for the film, this once again, gives us expectations of a good movie as it is a well recognised brand identity. As this shot is shown music starts. The music is energetic and fast and this sets the pace for the rest of the movie. The shot of the airoplane is then shown. This shows the establishing shot for the next scene. In this clip we see that the sky looks sunny and bright showing us that this movie will be happy and follow conventions of romance. We are next shown a clip of a male and female, and as this is a romance movie we presume that they are together. We can see that they are on the airplane and that they appear to be getting on well, typical of romance. We also notice that the male is wearing a suit. This makes him appear very masculine and also very dressed up, creating a strong contrast between the male and the female and showing the gender roles. The couple are laughing and joking showing that they are getting on well and that romanc eoculd blossom there. The music is also quieter when the characters are talking showing the importance of the speech. We then see the shot that tells us about other films directed by the director and as this is shown the lyrics for the song are "ive gotta feeling." This lyric relates to the movie as we can see that it about finding romance and the song is giving the audience a good vibe about it. The colours for the page are also black and white. These are contrasting colours and could be used to stand out, however they dont create much of a link between romance and the colours. Some of the text is also shown in bold making it stand out to the audience and portraying the importance of it. We then see the second couple shown. As they are in a bed this gives us and image of intamecy which stereotypically links the the romance genre. We also see the couple kiss, making the reader want to know more bout the film. The song continues to play and creates happiness in the trailer. We then see a girl sat around a table with older people. The set up for them shows that the girl is having an important conversation with the older people. We then here in this part that sex is mentoned. This stereotypically links to romance and makes us wonder what is going to happen and draws the reader in. The musica has a brief pause at the end of this clip before the penultimate clip is shown. This allows us to see a woman checking in to a hotel. As the woman say s"cheking in for 2" we automatically link the scene to romance. We then see thnat she has a dog with her and we wonder what has led her to this situation, again drawing in the reader. Finally we see the ends clips which show an image and the name of the actors involved. This is to help the audience regcognise them and by having biger stars makes the movie seem better. The text is again shown in black and white which allows us to create a link to what we saw before. The musica also continuses to play and the edits change in time with the music.

This navigation map is more basic than the Resident evil one. All the pages that are filled in can be accessed from every page. The pages that arent filled in are accessable from the pages of that colour. Also a few pages on this website open up in to another window, suggesting that they were not created by the production company.

Definatly, Maybe Website Analysis

On the first page of "Definitely, maybe", the title is shown at the top left. This is because in our culture we read from left to right, so it would be the first thing that the viewer would notice. This is shown throughout the rest of the website and the 'maybe' is slightly slanted towards the right, this is so that it focuses our eyes on what else is on the page. The colours scheme or the website is reds and pinks. These connotate love and romance, and that represents the genre of the movie. The main pages of the website are shown at the top and the bottom of every page, and when you click on them hearts appear over the writing. This again enhances the fact that it is a romantic movie. The DVD cover is shown on the left of the page, this is so that the viewer will recognise the DVD cover if the persuasion techniques of the website work. The page also shows a movie trailer, this is to persuade the viewer to watch the movie. The institutions for the website are shown at the bottom of every page and they are in small print and blend in easily. This is because although they are important they do not attract viewers attention as they will be least interested in them. There are also 4 pictures shown of the man with 3 woman and 1 girl, this relates to the cover as we can see they are the same characters but helps us to recognise the male as the main protagonist. We can also recognise that the young girl plays a large part in this movie as she is shown in a lot of the scene and clips that we see. In the background image we see a city shown, this shows the setting for the movie and acts as the establishing shot.
The 2nd page of the website is the quiz page. This opens up in a separate Internet box and we recognise the main protagonist again. The colours in this shot are very pink and girly and the male looks a bit out of place. This is showing that we are more likely to be in the girls room and develops another setting for the movie. From the pose of the characters we can also see that these shots were shots from the movie. The text is shown in the middle and an interactive game helps to attract the viewers attention.
On the third page title "Downloads" a background photo of the male protagonist is shown with a lady. The photos appear on the left as it would be the first thing that we would notice. The photos can be downloaded as wallpapers which once again keeps the interaction with the viewer. The males facial expression looks scared, whereas the woman looks happy, this leads us to question what happens in the movie. We can also see from the background again that the film is set in the city. There is snow on the floor and the actors are wearing coats suggesting that this was shot in winter which contrasts with the DVD cover, which looks like it was set in summer.
The 4th page is the trailer page. We can see that this page is set in the city. As this is an American film, when being viewed by a British audience we would automatically presume that this is set in New York. We see the main protagonist on the left hand side of the page, and he is with another female character it leads us the question what happens in the movie. This is a persuasion technique that entices the viewer. The woman is also holding a bottle of alcohol in her hand. This suggests that the movies target audience wouldnot be aimed at children and more towards teenage audience and above. The trailer is shown on the right of the page, where you get an option of two trailers to watch. This gives the viewer variation.
The 5th page is the film synopsis. This is an important page because it will be the page that persuades the viewer to buy the DVD and keep them enticed. The synopsis is on the right side of the page. The background shown again is in the city, which gives us a understanding of the setting and location for the movie.
The final page is the charactors and actors biography. On this page the text is shown on the left whereas the image is on the right, suggesting that the text for this page is more important than the image. The main protagonist appears first on this page and the continuation of reds occurs on this page.

Resident Evil Website Analysis

The first screen we see is the Homepage for the website. A large image is used to attract the audiences attention. The mise en scene and pose of the image links to the genre of the film because we can see the actor is holding props that associate to the action genre. The actors name is shown above the characters name linking to the character shown in the image. This shows that she is the most well know character i the movie,, as she is displayed on the main page. This image links to the target audience, 15 to late 20's men and woman, as the woman is shown as a domineering character, this would attract men as well as the element of guns and violence. The woman's facial expression is also very serious, this helps to establish the genre by showing that it is not a comedy, and keeps the link to an action movie. The institutions for the movie are shown at the top of the page. This shows that Sony is a Mainstream Institution and the smaller institutions are using the website as an advertising technique. Dark colours are used in the home page, this links to the genre of the movie as it is showing that it can be quite a dark film and the elements of violence show this. The font used on the page is sharp and silver. This connotes weapons and knifes which also shows a stereotypical link to weapons and violence during the movie. The font is also bold and strong, which might be linking to the representation of the character. The shards of glass that are falling help to show the violent impact from the image on the homepage. The violent aspect keeps the viewer questioning what is happening, and as only one character is shown, it leads to the viewer questioning why one woman needs violence and weapons. The audience are being enticed by the image and text. The reds and blacks on the page show the danger of the movie. As the red stands out so much, it links to blood. This is again creating a link to violence and the genre of the movie, without giving to much away. Also the words in red are "3D" which is showing the advance in media technology and is why the red is only used on his piece of text. The "Click to enter site" is shown with a snippet of the movie which makes the viewer want to enter the site as they want to find out more about the movie. The age rating of this movie is shown at the bottom of the age, this helps to also establish a target audience. The homepage shows a movie slogan at the bottom of the page,"experience a new dimension of evil" this is likely to be shown on the trailer and other advertising techniques. This helps the viewer the create a link between the advertisement of the movie.

The next page shown is the Main Menu Homepage. This hold the titles for each section of the website. The continuation of font and colour are used showing consistency and creating themed colours and fonts to associate the movie too. The character is also continuous, showing that she is the main protagonist of this movie. Her dominance remains in this image and the mise en scene still helps to create the theme of violence, danger and dominance. However, a different shot is used, as we now see a long shot of the woman rather than a mid shot. This shows the props the woman has and again connotes the violence. Glass shards are also used on this page to hold the text for the following pages, this shows creativity by the institution. The glass shards also connoted a break of equilibrium on the movie, showing a constant attack on the film. This gives the reader clues about what to expect on the movie. On this page, the release date for the movie is shown, this keeps the viewer enticed as as they read on through the website they find out more about the movie. The main titles for the website are shown at the bottom of the page and they are continued on every page of the website. The text "IMAX 3D" is an advertisement for technology used, and show that the movie is modern. The age rating is still shown on the page, showing the importance of the target audience. Institutions are still shown on the page but they are smaller, as they do not want to dominate the page.. There is also a link to facebook, this is a huge link between the target audience because they are the same age group that facebook is used at, showing that the website have done there research on the Target audience advertisement.

The third page is title "Assault on Umbrella". The title, actors and headings stay the same on this page, again showing the consistency. However this time we do see three shots of the main protagonist. The action theme is still portrayed in the images, through the props, pose and mise en scene., relating the the genre. The pages for the website are shown with the gunshots in the glass. This highlights the violence of the movie. The glass shards are also continued on this website page, as well as the colour theme and fonts. We can see the character is at a different setting that is lit up with bright lighting. This helps the viewer to work out the setting of the movie and help them to unravel the story. In this page we can also see smaller shots from the movie, that are quite faded. This is to keep the reader guessing ta what is happening in these mini shots.

The forth page is title "Over come the infected". The fonts and title remain the same, as do the glass shard and bullet shots on the page. However, the scene is different on this page. We see no main protagonist and the image looks like a fighting scene, the would link to the title of "overcome the infected" because the fight taking place will show who is the winner and who has overcome. We can also see red around the title and glass, this connotes blood which keeps the link the the action genre.
The 5th page is title "Search for survivors".This gives a clue as to what might happen in the movie. We can see that the scene is different and it looks more peaceful as it is set next to a lake. However, the jagged glass shards set a dark mood to the peaceful image and reminds us that there is darkness within the movie, even in the peaceful times. This gives the audience lots of clues about the movie. The main protagonist is shown in a long shot which makes it harder to identify.
The 6th page is titled "Track down Wesker". This page is different to the other 5 as it is a much lighter scene. The page is mainly white which is contrasting to the rest. Also the main protagonist is shown but another character is shown in the background making us question who this is. The characters are shown in darker colours showing that they are not at peace at this part of the movie.
The last page is titled "About the Film". This uses shots from the previous pages of the magazine and the text and font have previously been used to. This page also has the most text in it as it will be the most important to the viewer.
